Risk, Compliance & Audit

Industry background

The professionals who sit across risk, compliance and audit are among the hardest to find in the Australian market. The talent pool is small, the roles are highly specialised, and the best people in this space are rarely looking. They are embedded in organisations that know exactly what they would lose if they left and they are being compensated accordingly.

FutureYou's risk, compliance & audit practice is built specifically for this market. We work across all three lines of defence - risk management, compliance and regulatory, and internal audit, placing professionals from analyst level through to Chief Risk Officer, Chief Compliance Officer and Chief Audit Executive appointments.

The three lines of defence

One of the most important distinctions in risk and compliance hiring is understanding where a role sits within the three lines of defence model. Getting this wrong, briefing a second-line compliance manager when you actually need a first-line risk specialist, for example, leads to a longer process, a misaligned shortlist and ultimately a hire that doesn't stick.

Here is how the model works in practice:

First line - operational risk ownership

The business units and operational teams that own and manage risk day to day. First-line risk professionals are embedded in the business, identifying and controlling risks as they arise rather than monitoring from a distance.

Second line - risk management and compliance oversight

Independent functions that set the framework, monitor compliance with policies and regulations, and provide oversight of the first line. This is where the majority of risk management and compliance roles sit, from Compliance Managers and Regulatory Affairs specialists through to Enterprise Risk Managers and the CRO.

Third line - internal audit

The independent assurance function that evaluates whether the first and second lines are working effectively. Internal auditors report to the audit committee or board and provide an objective view of the organisation's risk and control environment.

When we take a brief, we get specific about which line the role sits in, what the reporting structure looks like, and what the organisation actually needs - not just what the job title says. That clarity makes for a better hire.

Why FutureYou

Access to professionals who aren't looking The compliance leader who built an AML framework from scratch. The risk manager who guided a business through a regulatory review without a single material finding. The internal audit director who has the trust of both the executive and the board. These professionals are not browsing job boards. They are reachable only through genuine, trusted relationships, the kind that take years to build. That is what our consultants bring.

Deep knowledge of this discipline Risk, compliance & audit is a specialist discipline. It requires understanding the difference between first and second-line risk functions, knowing what a strong AML professional actually looks like versus one who can talk the talk, and being able to advise clients on market salary benchmarks, role structure and what realistic timelines look like. We provide all of that as part of how we work.

A network that spans sectors Financial services has traditionally been the home of compliance and risk hiring in Australia and it remains the most active sector. But demand has spread. We work with technology businesses building compliance functions, healthcare organisations navigating regulatory reform, energy companies managing the complexity of the renewables transition, and professional services firms building out their risk capability. Our network spans all of it.

What does a risk and compliance recruiter do?

A specialist risk and compliance recruiter focuses specifically on sourcing, assessing and placing professionals across risk management, compliance and regulatory, and internal audit functions. Unlike a generalist recruiter, a specialist in this space understands the technical requirements of each role, the difference between first and second-line risk functions, the specific regulatory knowledge required for financial services compliance, what a strong AML professional looks like, and how to access talent who are not actively on the market. At FutureYou, we recruit across all three lines of defence, from analyst through to C-suite.

What is the difference between risk management and compliance?

Risk management and compliance are related but distinct functions. Risk management - particularly at the first and second line - involves identifying, assessing and mitigating the risks a business faces across its operations, finances and strategy. Compliance focuses specifically on ensuring the organisation adheres to relevant laws, regulations, industry standards and internal policies. In practice, many organisations have separate risk and compliance functions, each with their own leadership and reporting lines. Understanding which function you are hiring for - and where it sits in the three lines of defence model - is critical to briefing a role correctly.

What is an AML specialist and why are they so hard to find?

AML stands for anti-money laundering. An AML specialist designs, implements and manages the systems and processes an organisation uses to detect and prevent financial crime - including customer due diligence, transaction monitoring, suspicious matter reporting and regulatory liaison. AML professionals are among the hardest to find in the Australian market because the pipeline of genuinely experienced practitioners is thin relative to demand, regulatory expectations have grown significantly, and organisations in financial services, fintech and payments are all competing for the same cohort. If you need someone who can own an AML programme end to end, expect a competitive process and a salary conversation that may surprise you.

What is the three lines of defence model?

The three lines of defence is a governance framework used by most regulated organisations to manage risk and maintain accountability. The first line covers operational teams that own and manage risk in their day-to-day work. The second line covers independent risk management and compliance functions that set frameworks, monitor the first line and provide oversight. The third line is internal audit - an independent function that assesses whether the first two lines are working effectively and reports to the board or audit committee. Most risk, compliance and audit hiring sits within the second and third lines.

How do I hire a Chief Risk Officer in Australia?

Hiring a CRO requires a search approach rather than a job posting approach. The most effective CROs in Australia are almost never actively looking - they are in roles where they are well regarded and selectively open to the right conversation. A successful CRO search requires direct outreach to a passive talent pool, a structured assessment process that goes well beyond the CV, and the ability to position the role compellingly to someone with other options. FutureYou conducts bespoke retained search processes for senior risk, compliance and audit appointments. Contact us to discuss your requirements.

What compliance and risk salaries should I be offering in FY26/27?

Salary benchmarks in risk, compliance & audit have moved significantly in recent years and FY26/27 has seen further adjustment at the senior end of the market - particularly for AML specialists, senior compliance managers and internal audit leaders, where demand continues to outpace supply. Anchoring on salary data from 18 months ago is one of the most common reasons a compliance hiring process stalls at the offer stage. We provide current salary benchmarking as part of our client briefing process - contact us for a market read specific to your role, level and sector.

Why are the best compliance professionals so hard to find?

Several factors converge to make senior compliance and risk hiring genuinely difficult. The talent pool is small relative to demand. The best professionals are in roles where they are valued and well compensated, which means they are not actively looking. Counter-offers are common and aggressive - employers who realise a strong compliance professional is considering leaving tend to respond quickly. And the specific expertise required - whether that is APRA-regulated entity experience, AML programme ownership, or board-level risk reporting - narrows the field significantly. Access to this cohort requires genuine relationships with passive talent, not just a well-written job ad.

Do you place internal audit professionals as well as risk and compliance?

Yes. FutureYou's practice covers all three lines of defence, including internal audit from Internal Auditor and Senior Internal Auditor level through to Head of Internal Audit, Director of Internal Audit and Chief Audit Executive appointments. We also place IT Auditors and Technology Audit Managers for organisations whose internal audit function covers systems, data and cyber risk. Internal audit professionals are a distinct talent pool from risk and compliance, and our team has the relationships and knowledge to access both.
