In the September’s edition of FutureYou’s TaxTalks, Michael Phillips, Associate Partner, Accounting & Finance goes a little off-piste and delves into the world of Audit by speaking to Ken Weldin, Partner & National Lead for Internal Audit & Corporate Governance at PKF. PKF in Australia has over 85 partners and 750 staff, and are an international Top 10 accounting group.

Ken has a broad background in Audit, Risk, Governance and Industry, in Australia and Scotland. After 11 years with EY, Ken joined the team at PKF in 2016 and has been responsible for growing the division over the last 2 years.

Michael: What is the one trait that got you to where you are today, and why is it so important?

Ken Weldin: Perseverance & playing the long game. Not everything works out right, first or even second time so be prepared to take ups & downs in your stride & don’t be afraid to keep trying something new.

Michael: Aside from someone’s experience, what else do you look for in a candidate?

Ken Weldin: A questioning attitude as things are not always as they first appear.

Michael: What is the main challenge that you experience being an accounting partner in today’s market?

Ken Weldin: Keeping things simple. Jargon & complexity excludes people, both team members & clients.

Michael: What is the biggest change in the industry over the last 5 years, and how has it effected the way your practice is run?

Ken Weldin: Pace – in part by technology & in part by the expectations placed upon us – balanced with the need to make sure we have worked through all angles.

Michael: What is the one piece of advice you would give to a Graduate Accountant?

Ken Weldin: Listen, ask, challenge & through all of that, enjoy.
