We all want to perform at our best, but the stresses of work and life are as unavoidable as they are necessary. So we’ve constructed the Zone In series – a few short yoga hacks – to offer some well deserved performance-enhancing relief. These brief movements, as presented  by FutureYou’s resident wellness adviser, Sol Walkling, can be easily performed at your desk or simply conducted on the floor at home or in the office, if that’s something you’re comfortable doing.

Yoga spinal stretch

Sitting at your desk all day, driving around for work, or engaging in physical activities like jogging can all compact your spine and supporting muscles.

The resulting tension in your spine can be shifted with gentle stretches that increase blood flow, awareness and promote a greater feeling of well being…

If in doubt, look to the masters. Look at how naturally and blissfully cats stretch out.

As you perform your spinal stretch, take deep, full breaths into your torso. Draw your awareness here. Relieve both your nervous system and stress levels by exhaling through the mouth and relaxing into the exhale. A few breaths linked with natural movement can help bring you into a parasympathetic nervous system state.

This means you go from fight or flight into rest and digest mode.

Regularly practicing these releases will help you be more aware of your posture as you sit at your desk. It will assist you in noticing tension before it becomes an issue and too painful.

Tension and pain in the body results in a lack of focus and mental clarity. The more awareness you create around your posture at work and the more regularly you move your body, the more you will feel at ease in your skin and the more productive you’ll be.

Easeful body = peaceful mind.
